The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued the following weather warnings for Friday, 7 June 2024:

  • Orange Level 5 Warning: Storm surge is expected along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and Buffalo City. This will result in coastal flooding due to an increased sea level of 0.4m above the highest astronomical high tide combined with flooding rivers.
  • Yellow Level 2 Warning: Damaging winds and waves are anticipated, leading to navigation difficulties for small vessels and personal watercraft between Plettenberg Bay and Kosi Bay.
  • Yellow Level 2 Warning: Damaging waves are expected to cause navigation difficulties and small vessels taking on water along the coast between Plettenberg Bay and East London, extending to Port Edward by the morning.
  • Yellow Level 2 Warning: Disruptive snow leading to icy roads and traffic disruption with some passes being closed temporarily over the northeastern parts of the Eastern Cape.

Advisories:

  • Very cold, wet, and windy conditions are expected over the southern parts of both Free State and Northern Cape, as well as the Karoo Hoogland and Beaufort West municipalities in the Western Cape.

  • Gauteng: The province will experience fine and cool to cold weather. The UVB sunburn index is expected to be very high.
  • Mpumalanga: Fine and cold to cool weather will prevail, but it will be warm in the east.

Winds will be moderate northerly north of Cape Columbine, turning moderate southeasterly to easterly in the afternoon, and fresh to strong westerly to southwesterly east of Cape Agulhas.
  • Western Half of the Eastern Cape: Cloudy and cold with isolated showers and rain, and scattered showers along the coast. Light snowfalls may occur over the northern high-lying areas. Moderate to fresh southwesterly winds, becoming southerly in the east in the afternoon.
  • Eastern Half of the Eastern Cape: Cloudy and cold with isolated showers and rain, and scattered showers along the coast. Light snowfalls are possible over the northern high-lying areas where it will be very cold. Fresh to strong southwesterly winds, turning moderate southerly in the south, spreading to the east in the afternoon.
  • KwaZulu-Natal: Partly cloudy in the south initially, becoming cloudy and cold to cool with isolated showers and rain along the coast and adjacent interior. Fresh to strong north-easterly winds in the north at first, turning fresh to strong southwesterly, reaching gale force at times.
