Western Cape weather warnings for Sunday, 27 October 2024
An Orange Level 6 warning predicts severe rain over the Western Cape, while Yellow Level 2 warnings caution against strong winds across Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo.
A cut-off low system is forecasted to bring severe rain and thunderstorms across the Western Cape on Sunday, persisting through Monday.
According to SAWS, heavy rains will affect areas including the Cape Winelands, City of Cape Town, Overberg, and adjacent coastal regions, with rainfall amounts expected to exceed 90-120 mm in mountainous areas.
This storm is expected to disrupt transport routes due to potential flooding, fallen trees, and slippery roads.
“The forecast calls for high impacts, including possible displacement in informal settlements and blocked roads,” SAWS said in a statement.
Residents in high-risk zones have been cautioned to avoid non-essential travel and refrain from crossing swollen rivers or streams.
In addition to the heavy rain, Gauteng, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo are under Yellow Level 2 warnings for damaging winds on Sunday, where wind speeds of up to 80 km/h could cause localised fires, fallen trees, and dangerous driving conditions, particularly for high-sided vehicles.
