The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed payment dates for February 2025, ensuring beneficiaries can plan ahead for their financial needs.
SASSA latest updates this month
SASSA has announced the suspension of payments for select Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant beneficiaries to verify their identities.
This move is part of an intensified effort to combat fraudulent claims and ensure grants are directed to legitimate recipients.
In a statement released earlier this week, SASSA explained:
“This activity aims to protect beneficiaries from identity theft and ensure that payments are made to the rightful individuals. Beneficiaries whose records are flagged for verification can reapply after confirming their identities.”
SASSA’s recent measures stem from alarming revelations about systemic vulnerabilities in its SRD application process.
Earlier this year, Stellenbosch University students Joel Cedras and Veer Gosai presented their findings to Parliament’s social development portfolio committee, exposing gaps in the system that enable widespread fraud.
Cedras recounted his personal experience of discovering an SRD application active under his name without his knowledge.
Further investigation revealed that 58 out of 60 surveyed students had SRD applications linked to their names, with 56 unaware of the applications.
“This indicates an extremely high rate of fraudulent activity within the system,” Cedras told the committee.
