BET Africa took to social media to share the announcement.

“South African Entrepreneur, Rapper, and Fashion Icon, Rikhado “Riky Rick” Makhado will be honoured posthumously with the inaugural Global Visionary Award,” the caption read.

The rapper passed away on 23 February 2022 after taking his own life at his Johannesburg home. This comes after a long battle with mental health issues.

Riky received his flowers at the 2022 SAMA Awards with a tribute performance from A Reece, Tshego, and Stogie T.

Riky Rick rose to prominence in 2014 with the release of Nafukwa. This song demonstrated South Africa’s distinctive fusion of Hip-Hop and Kwaito. Later, Riky went on to win the MTV Africa Award for Video of the Year in 2015.

Moreover, he was the owner of Cotton Club Records and Cotton Fest. The latter is a music festival that celebrates urban culture and provides a career-defining stage for up-and-coming artists.

Fat Joe is the official host of this year’s ceremony. The awards will take place on Friday, 30 September 2022, in Atlanta. However, it will only be available for viewing in South Africa on Wednesday, 5 October 2022, on DSTv channel 129.
