The Democratic Alliance (DA) has terminated the membership of Renaldo Gouws, a Member of Parliament, following a unanimous decision by its Federal Executive (FedEx).
- Renaldo Gouws was expelled from the DA after a FedEx decision found him guilty of contravening the party’s constitution.
- The DA says Gouws’ conduct violated core party values of accountability and non-racialism.
- The expulsion follows the dismissal of Roman Cabanac amid controversy over his appointment.
Democratic Alliance clarifies decision to axe Renaldo Gouws
DA National Spokesperson Willie Aucamp confirmed the decision on Friday, stating that the party’s Federal Legal Commission (FLC) found Gouws guilty of violating several sections of the DA’s constitution.
“The DA remains committed to upholding its values of accountability, non-racialism, and respect for all South Africans,” said Aucamp in a formal statement.
Gouws’ termination also means he forfeits his parliamentary seat.
The decision came after a resurfaced video allegedly showed Gouws making racial slurs in 2010.
Despite Gouws’ denial, claiming the footage could be AI-generated, the DA’s investigation concluded that his actions were in direct conflict with the party’s principles.
Gouws’ exit follows Roman Cabanac’s axing
This marks the second high-profile dismissal for the DA in a single day.
Earlier, the party faced public outcry over the appointment of Roman Cabanac as the chief of staff to DA leader John Steenhuisen at the Department of Agriculture.
Cabanac’s controversial views and past remarks drew significant backlash, with many party members urging his removal.
Steenhuisen eventually requested Cabanac’s resignation, admitting, “We don’t always get it right. People make mistakes, and the key is how we address them.”
The DA leader took full responsibility for the misstep.
With both Gouws and Cabanac out, the DA is grappling with internal challenges while trying to maintain its position as South Africa’s primary opposition party.
