Nota Baloyi is at a crossroads in his life, and on Friday, a Johannesburg court paved a road to redemption with a staggering R200 000 toll fee for the controversial commenter.
Nota Baloyi loses DJ Shimza defamation case
The estranged husband of Berita, who, a day ago, informed the world of her intention to never return to their frail marriage, was dealt another whammy when the Johannesburg High Court ruled in favour of DJ Shimza.
The matter relates to a defamation lawsuit filed by the popular Afrotech DJ in November 2021 in response to Baloyi’s Twitter rant, where he alleged Shimza was the beneficiary of underhanded tender deals due to his romantic relationship with Presidency’s Head of Digital Communications, Athi Geleba.
While Shimza sought R500 000 in relief from Baloyi’s hurtful comments, the Johannesburg High Court ordered Baloyi to settle R200 000 in damages.
“The defendant is ordered to pay damages to the plaintiff in the amount of R200 000. The defendant shall pay interest on the sum of R200 000 at the mora rate from the date of judgment to the date of payment,” the court ruled.
On top of the R200 000, Baloyi will have to settle 7% interest on the defamation value, which, when calculated, amounts to R14 000. Shimza, taking the high road in his courtroom victory, has not said a word about the lawsuit outcome. His girlfriend, however, issued a public warning to Twitter trolls who, like Baloyi, have perpetuated unfounded claims about her romantic involvement with Shimza and his business relations.
Baloyi, who is often raucous on Twitter streets, has been a ghost on Friday. However, he did post cryptic messages on his Instagram story, suggesting that he is ‘unbreakable’.
“2Pac is dead… No heir, I’d rather be Will. Unbreakable!” he wrote.
