KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service arrived at the scene to find two vehicles involved in the collision, with two individuals suffering serious injuries.
According to paramedics, the other three victims sustained less severe injuries but were still in significant pain.
The medical team worked to stabilise the victims at the scene before transporting them to a nearby hospital for further medical care.
As the scene was cleared and the road reopened, traffic on the N2 near Empangeni returned to normal.
In a separate incident in Grangetown, KwaZulu-Natal, an 18-year-old Ethiopian national fled the scene after the bakkie he was driving crashed into a tree on Palm Street, on Monday.
According to witnesses, the driver left the scene on foot after the crash.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was notified at approximately 17:46, and officers were dispatched to the site.
Upon arrival, RUSA officers discovered a white Nissan NP200 bakkie that had collided with a tree.
The driver later returned with a relative and stated that he fled due to fear for his safety. He was uninjured, and no further casualties were reported.
Both incidents remain under investigation by local authorities.
