Speculation is rife about a possible Migos breakup, but what exactly is this rumour based on?
Where do the Migos breakup rumours come from?
Social media has been abuzz with fans mourning what looks like the end of an era. Four studio albums, two compilation tapes and EPs, and 16 mixtapes later, it seems the brotherhood is over.
Or, at least, this is what fans are claiming about Offset, Quavo and Takeoff. The speculation, however, was not prompted by a song with submlinals, as would be the case in Hip-Hop, nor was there any public declaration from the trio.
Instead, a Twitter account dedicated to tracking who follows who on ‘celebrity’ Instagram noticed that Offset and his wife Cardi B had unfollowed Quavo and Takeoff.
To millennials, this spells war.
Moreover, the Migos breakup rumours were further exacerbated by the fact that Quavo and Takeoff, who, in reality, are related (Quavo is Takeoff’s uncle), are releasing a new single on Friday Hotel Lobby under new pseudonyms, ‘Unc and Phew’.
While this does hold weight for a circumstantial argument, Quavo does have a history of pseudonyms with every duo he joins.
Outside of the Migos and Unc and Phew, Quavo is also one-half of Huncho Jack (the other half is Travis Scott).
It’s unclear, at this time, if Unc and Phew is the start of an album campaign following the release of the Migos’ Culture 3 in June 2021, but the absence of Offset was enough to launch social media into a panic.
However, these words by Offset taken from an interview he and the other Migos did with Flaunt Magazine in October 2021, could provide greater context on the nature of their brotherhood.
“Through our journey we had ups and downs like everybody else as far as career and everything, but we always stick through, because even prior to this we had a lot of friends, but it was always Qua, Take, and Set,” he said.
