Cape Town authorities stumble on dog butcher chamber in Mfuleni
The raid, conducted by Cape Town’s Crime Intelligence unit in collaboration with local health and municipal officials, exposed an unsanitary manufacturing setup, raising immediate health and safety concerns for residents.
The raid took place on Wednesday, November 13, 2024, following a tip-off that led authorities to the unlicensed facility in Mfuleni.
Upon arrival, officials found sausages being made in conditions that were described as highly unhygienic.
The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, JP Smith, confirmed the scope of the findings, stating that the premises “posed a significant health risk to consumers.”
Evidence found on-site included work surfaces contaminated with various unidentifiable substances, unsanitary packaging materials, and equipment that appeared to have gone without proper cleaning for extended periods.
Forensic teams collected samples of the meat products to verify whether dog meat was indeed being used as the primary protein, as the tip-off suggested.
In light of the serious health risks, the facility was immediately shut down and designated as a crime scene.
Adding to the shock, authorities discovered that the facility’s owner and four employees were suspected of being in the country illegally.
“Everyone found on the premises will be detained,” Smith stated.
