Makhadzi continues to make strides in her music career and along with that, comes negative commentary.
This time around, Limpopo’s high-octane performer faced backlash for choosing to launch her one-woman arena concert in Botswana. The show, as it stands, is without a venue, but Makhadzi has already confirmed it will be taking place on 26 March 2022.
Makhadzi hit with backlash for giving back to Botswana
Moreover, the African Queen will donate 10% of her net earnings from the show to charity groups in Botswana. This, however, was not well-received by her hometown supporters.
Makwena Makgakga, a renowned radio broadcaster in Limpopo, posted an open letter addressed to Makhadzi, calling for her to reconsider the decision she made about hosting her one-woman show in Botswana.
“The idea of having one woman show in Botswana and give back to them is not a good idea. Start in your poorest province. Venda in particular, there is too much poverty there,” Makgakga wrote.
The radiocaster also criticised Makhadzi for launching her philanthropic work in a foreign country and urged her to start the charity work in Venda, where 95% of her bookings are made.
“I have about 25 learners who came looking for uniform here in Limpopo. We have quite a huge number of students who dropped out due to fees. How did Botswana do to support your music which we didn’t do in Limpopo? On the 16 December we came in our numbers (even if it was raining) to support you.
Charity begins at Home Khadzi,” he pleaded.
Makhadzi responded to the open letter and informed Makgakga that contrary to what he may believe, she only turned to Botswana after she’d exhausted every option in an attempt to secure Peter Mokaba and Thohoyandou stadiums as possible venues for her one-woman show.
“I have been trying to get Thohoyandou stadium and Peter Mokaba stadium but no-one is willing to give me a stadium. Unless maybe I am contacting the wrong people. It will be a dream come true to be the first Limpopo woman to fill a stadium. I have been trying since 2019,” she said.
As things stand, Makhadzi has no plans of hosting a one-woman show in South Africa before her dig day in Botswana.
