16 December: How your favourite celebs spent ‘Day of Reconciliation’
Avuya Walters

The holiday season has picked up steam and on Monday, 16 December, South Africans celebrated the Day of Reconciliation.

Why does South Africa celebrate Day of Reconciliation?

Unbeknownst to many of us, the Day of Reconciliation is very important in our history. According to Days of the Year, the holiday was introduced in 1994 “as a way to heal the rift between the people of South Africa, and bring harmony to a nation still suffering from decades of injustice.”

Aside from the meaning behind the day, the date, 16 December, holds great significance too. It was carefully selected as a way of recognising historic events that took place on the day that are important to different ethnicities, such as:

  • the Day of the Covenant, a religious holiday celebrating a victory over the Zulus by the Voortrekker’s in 1838 at the Battle of Blood River;
  • a day of one of an important protest in 1910 against racial discrimination;
  • the Umkhonto we Sizwe, the “Spear o the Nation”, was established, an armed force of the ANC; and
  • the first acts of sabotage and violent resistance against the apartheid leaders also happened on that day in history.

Here’s what your favourite celebs got up to on 16 December

The day’s festivities often bring out the best in local celebrities. Here’s what some of SA’s most loved public figures got up to on the Day of Reconciliation.

AKA is most definitely out and about, looking at his Instagram stories. He will want to take it easy on Monday, though, after killing it the night before at Black Coffee’s Music Is King concert.

Your girl Bonang Matheba is not even in the country. Queen B has been spotted in Lagos, Nigeria, letting her hair loose.

Black Coffee shut down the Ticketpro Dome, in Johannesburg, on Sunday night, hit up the club and only walked out the building on Monday morning. If he is not sleeping at the moment, he can’t possibly be human.
