It’s that time of the year. MTV is rolling out its annual Base Hottest MCs list and the first phase of the ‘big reveal’ has rubbed fans of Nadia Nakai the wrong way.

What is the Base Hottest MCs about?

Base Hottest MCs is a segment that runs once a year on MTV Base. It caps off the year in South Africa’s music industry by pitting ten of the best rappers against each other.

The categories used to measure a rapper’s success in that year are debated on by a selected panel of local celebrities with vested currency in the game.

Nadia Nakai fans outraged by MTV Base

To build on the anticipation, Base Hottest MCs has, this time around, rolled out the Top 10 in two phases.

On Wednesday, the panel, which consists of Mercia Tucker (Editor of The Plug); Kyeezi (Radio DJ); DJ Sabby; Sipho Muchi; DJ PH; and DJ Double D, published their pickings for position 10 to six.

The original makeup of these positions does not matter anymore because MTV Base, on Wednesday evening, published the reshuffled version of the 10th to the sixth spot.

Nadia Nakai, who has had a relatively successful year with the release of her debut single, Nadia Naked, accompanied by a film documentary about the whole experience, was perturbed by her placement on the 10th spot.

The Family Tree first lady quoted the announcement with a cheeky “hmmm…” and all Twitter hell broke loose.

Her hive, led by Mufasa (Cassper Nyovest), attacked the integrity of those who voted her in that spot.

Although it was not said in so many words, her fans were particularly disturbed by the fact that Sho Madjozi — who has her own case to plead — was ranked two spots better than the rapstress.

MTV Base, obviously enjoying the impact of their rollout, revealed that this was not the final standing. In fact, it is highly possible that some names featured on the first phase of the list may drop into the Top Five.
