Lerato ‘Lira‘ Molapo is currently receiving medical treatment after she suffered a stroke in Germany.
Lira suffered a stroke in Germany
In a statement, the Afro Pop star’s family confirmed she was rushed back to South Africa where she has been undergoing treatment led by the “best medical team available”.
From what we understand, the 44-year-old recently travelled to Germany for a performance but had to cut the trip short after suffering a stroke, a disease that affects the arteries leading to the brain.
According to her family, Lira’s speech has been impaired and, as things stand, she struggles to verbally communicate. However, the Feel Good star has kept a positive outlook on her journey to recovery.
“Her medical team has advised that her journey to recovery will require patience and therefore, it is unlikely that she will be able to perform in the short term. That said, Lira is in good spirits and is surrounded by her loving family and close friends as she journeys towards a full recovery,” the statement read.
The songstress’ concerts have been postponed in the interim and her family has asked for privacy in her journey to recovery.
“We thank you all in advance for your prayers, support, kindness, and utmost sensitivity and consideration during this very challenging time in her life. Let there be light!” the family said.
What are the causes of stroke?
According to stroke.org, the disease is the fifth highest cause of death in the US. More worryingly, suffering a stroke increases chances of permanent disability in most cases.
“A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, so it and brain cells die.”
