Emergency response teams across KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) are on standby following an Orange Level 8 warning for disruptive rainfall and severe thunderstorms issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS).
Heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected to persist through Wednesday, 8 January 2025, with the risk of localized flooding, infrastructure damage, and road closures looming large.
N3 incidents reported on Tuesday, 7 January 2025
The N3 Toll Concession reported multiple incidents on the key national route today.
Among the most notable are:
- N3 Joburg-bound near Van Reenen Town: A truck and car collision has obstructed the right lane. Recovery operations are ongoing, but traffic is moving cautiously past the scene.
- Van Reenen’s Pass Crash: The clean-up of the deadly multi-vehicle crash Durban-bound, which claimed 18 lives, has been completed. All lanes in both directions have reopened. Motorists are urged to proceed with extreme caution on this stretch.
Emergency services on high alert
The eThekwini Municipality’s Disaster Management Centre has ramped up readiness efforts, deploying additional teams to monitor high-risk areas.
While no reports of widespread flooding have emerged, authorities are urging residents in vulnerable zones to remain vigilant and prepare for potential evacuations.
Motorists are advised to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone regions.
As rain continues to lash parts of the province, SAWS and local authorities recommend the following:
- Avoid crossing flooded roads or bridges, even if the water seems shallow.
- Relocate to higher ground if rising water levels threaten your area.
- Keep an emergency kit with flashlights, water, and non-perishable food items readily available.
