King Misuzulu kaZwelithini, monarch of the Zulu Nation, has cancelled his traditional wedding to Nomzamo Myeni, who was set to become his third wife.
King Misuzulu on why the wedding was cancelled
In a letter addressed to KwaZulu-Natal’s Director-General, Dr Nonhlanhla Mkhize, the king cited “reasons beyond the control of the Royal House” as the cause for the abrupt cancellation.
The letter did not elaborate further on the reasons behind the decision.
The wedding, initially scheduled for next weekend, had been surrounded by growing controversy.
Adding to the tension was the legal challenge from Queen Ntokozo Mayisela, one of King Misuzulu’s other wives, who had filed a court application to interdict the ceremony.
The king’s letter also instructed the immediate withdrawal of benefits and state security assigned to Myeni.
The letter detailed that all allowances, privileges, and security details provided to Myeni were to be terminated, with security services officially withdrawn by 11:00 on Sunday.
Is the letter authentic?
Despite the significant implications of the letter, its authenticity has not been confirmed by the Royal Office.
Members of the Zulu Royal Family have reportedly acknowledged awareness of the development, but the letter remains unverified. Dr Mkhize, the addressee, stated that she had not received the document as of Saturday, citing non-operational weekend schedules.
This development follows the recent dismissal of Prince Simphiwe Zulu, a senior royal staffer and spokesperson for the king.
The timing of the sacking, coupled with the wedding cancellation, has fuelled speculation about internal discord within the Royal House.
The legal team representing Queen Mayisela noted they have not received official communication regarding the wedding’s cancellation. As of now, they intend to proceed with their scheduled court action to block the wedding.
The cancellation casts a dark shadow over the status of the king’s relationship with Myeni, as the withdrawal of her security detail and royal benefits appears to mark a definitive shift in her standing.
