Taylor Swift‘s collaboration with Ice Spice has sparked controversy, as fans of the rapper have decided to boycott the new feature.
Ice Spice fans boycott Taylor Swift feature
The announcement of the collaboration came shortly after Swift’s boyfriend, Matty Healy, made insulting remarks directed at Ice Spice, creating an awkward and potentially deliberate timing for the joint project.
Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Swift shared the exciting news, expressing her admiration for Ice Spice as an artist and proclaiming her as the one to watch.
She revealed that their collaboration, titled Karma, would be released as part of the new deluxe album called Midnights (Til Dawn Edition), which fans could pre-order in advance. Swift also hinted at other upcoming projects she has in store.
The timing of the Ice Spice collaboration, however, couldn’t be more uncomfortable, given the recent controversy surrounding Matty’s derogatory comments about the rapper.
During an appearance on The Adam Friedland Show in February 2023, Matty, along with Friedland and Nick Mullen, made disrespectful remarks about Ice Spice while also mocking accents of Chinese and Hawaiian origin.
The resurfacing of this clip coincided with another clip in which Ice Spice expressed her admiration for Matty’s band, The 1975, during a separate interview.
Matty issued an apology last month for his offensive comments, but some fans deemed it inadequate, feeling that it lacked sincerity.
The controversial episode was subsequently removed from various platforms. This situation adds another layer of complexity to the collaboration, as Taylor and Matty have been closely linked since news broke of her breakup with long-time boyfriend Joe Alwyn.
Despite the controversy surrounding Matty’s comments, it is worth noting that Taylor and Ice Spice have previously shared positive moments together.
In March 2023, Ice Spice introduced Taylor’s Song of the Year win for Anti-Hero at the 2023 iHeart Awards, and the two artists even posed for photos together, showcasing a seemingly amicable relationship.
