A devastating crash in the Kokosi-Wedela area of Merafong, Carletonville, on Wednesday morning, claimed the lives of 12 schoolchildren and their driver.

The Gauteng Education Department confirmed in a media statement that 11 of the children were from Rocklands Primary School, and one was from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig.

The tragic incident occurred when a private scholar transport mini-bus was struck from behind by a bakkie, causing the vehicle to overturn and catch fire.

The accident happened around 06:45, and the impact and subsequent fire resulted in the immediate loss of twelve young lives.

The department also reported that seven other learners were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

The affected children were on their way to school when the tragedy occurred. 

“The loss of our children is a devastating blow to our community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and injured learners. We extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends, and the entire school community,” Gauteng MEC for Education, Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane said.

The MEC stated that police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident to determine the exact cause and any possible negligence involved.
