The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) elected its new Top Six leadership team at the party’s third National People’s Assembly (NPA) on Saturday, held at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Soweto.
EFF re-elects Julius Malema: Here is the new Top Six
Julius Malema was re-elected as party president, solidifying his role at the helm of the organisation since its founding in 2013.
The election process, officiated by the Institute of Election Management Services chairperson Terry Tselane, was described as free and fair.
Joining Malema in the Top Six are:
- Godrich Gardee as Deputy President;
- Nontando Nolutshungu as National Chairperson;
- Omphile Maotwe as Treasurer General;
- Marshall Dlamini as Secretary-General; and
- Leigh-Ann Mathys as Deputy Secretary-General.
This year’s assembly followed the resignation of former Deputy President Floyd Shivambu, who departed to establish the MK Party earlier this year.
The leadership changes mark a significant moment for the EFF as it prepares for upcoming political campaigns and challenges.
The assembly also included discussions about the party’s future strategy and plans to expand its influence across South Africa.
The NPA was not without controversy.
Dr Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, a long-standing member and former spokesperson for the party, was notably absent from the proceedings.
Speculation about his absence dominated conversations on the sidelines of the assembly.
When asked about Ndlozi’s absence, Malema dismissed its significance, stating:
“We are not going to reduce this organisation to some individual. Whoever is not here was not supposed to be here from the beginning.”
He criticised what he described as “egoism” within the party, asserting that the EFF’s mission is larger than any one individual.
Ndlozi has yet to issue a statement addressing his absence or Malema’s remarks, leaving questions about his role in the party unanswered.
