Authorities are continuing their investigation into the tragic car accident that claimed the lives of three primary school pupils from Dr CF Visserskool near Bloemfontein last week.
Investigation into Dr CF Visserskool car accident still ongoing
A fourth pupil remains in the intensive care unit, battling severe injuries.
According to Free State police spokesperson Captain Loraine Earle, the accident occurred on Friday, 24 January 2025, on the N8 at the Kruger Avenue intersection when a sedan and a bakkie collided.
The impact of the crash was fatal for three children, identified as Ryan Smith, 6, Ayden Smith, 8, and Leane Van Papendorp.
The fourth pupil, Tennique Joubert, 6, survived but remains in critical condition. The Free State Education Department confirmed that she is receiving around-the-clock medical attention, though updates on her progress remain scarce.
Earle confirmed that both drivers were also injured and transported to the hospital.
However, no official cause of the accident has been determined, and police are actively working to gather all relevant evidence, including specialist reports.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation to establish all contributing factors that led to the accident,” Earle said.
“Once the investigation is completed, the docket will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for a decision on any possible charges.”
Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation and allow investigators time to complete their work.
As the community mourns, messages of support continue to pour in for the victims’ families. Free State Education MEC Dr MJ Maboya expressed condolences on behalf of the province’s education sector.
“On behalf of the entire education fraternity in the Free State and South Africa, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased learners,” Maboya stated.
“May they find comfort in knowing that we share their loss and mourn the passing of these young lives.”
Dr CF Visserskool principal Riekie Venter echoed these sentiments, describing the loss as “unimaginable” and offering prayers for Joubert’s recovery.
Meanwhile, the school community has received messages of sympathy from institutions such as Trio Primêr Kroonstad, which extended their condolences and offered full support.
“We wish the parents, families, and friends of the deceased the best of luck,” the school’s statement read.
“We also wish the young girl who is currently in hospital a speedy and full recovery. May there be hope and strength for her and her family during this time of uncertainty.”
Psychological support has been made available to teachers, pupils, and affected families as they grapple with the tragedy.
