Demi Lovato has decided to adopt the use of she/her pronouns after coming out as non-binary in 2021.
Here’s why Demi Lovato made the change
In May 2021, Lovato made the announcement that she identifies as nonbinary. A term used to describe people who do not identify as totally male or female.
However, recently, the singer sparked fans’ interest when she added the “she/her” pronouns to her social media pages. She has explained her reason for this in a recent podcast episode with Spout.
“I’ve actually adopted the pronouns of she/her again. So, for me, I’m such a fluid person… that I felt like, especially last year, my energy was balanced in my masculine and feminine energy. So when I was faced with the choice of walking into a bathroom and it said ‘women’ and ‘men,’ I didn’t feel like there was a bathroom for me. Because I didn’t feel necessarily like a woman, I didn’t feel like a man, I just felt like a human,” she said.
The former Disney star went on further to say, “I think what’s important is nobody’s perfect. Everyone messes up pronouns at some point, especially when people are learning. It’s just all about respect,”
The 29-year-old added that she is definitely “feeling more feminine” in recent days. She now lists her pronouns as ‘they/them/she/her.’
Last year, the Camp Rock actress came out as nonbinary in a video that she shared on Instagram. “I am proud to let you know that I identify as nonbinary and will officially be changing my pronouns to they/them moving forward,” the singer said at the time.
In other Demi Lovato news, the singer is set to release her eighth studio album, Holy Fvck, on 19 August 2022. Lovato released the album’s lead single, Skin of My Teeth, earlier this year. Lovato will begin the Holy Fvck Tour on 13 August 2022.
During her interview with Spout, she said that this is the first album that she has recorded while being completely sober. She noted that she is so proud of it. “To look back at a body of work and think, ‘wow, I was clear-headed for all of that’,” she added.
Lovato has struggled with substance abuse since 2013. Following nearly six years of sobriety, the actress overdosed in 2018. She nearly died in a hospital after suffering several strokes and a heart attack connected with the overdose.
However, Lovato didn’t let her addiction win. For years, many details of Lovato’s overdose were kept secret. It was only after the release of Demi’s 2021 documentary series, Dancing with the Devil, did the singer’s drug abuse come into full view and her awakenings in the aftermath.
