Just days after Johannesburg residents emerged from a gruelling 86-hour water blackout, the City of Tshwane announced an emergency water supply interruption scheduled for Tuesday, 17 December 2024.
City of Tshwane eight-hour water outage will affect these areas
The disruption will last for at least eight hours, from 08:00 to 16:00, as the city carries out critical repairs to an old 500 mm water pipe supplying the Atteridgeville and Laudium reservoirs.
Residents in several suburbs will be impacted during the emergency shutdown. The following areas are expected to experience water supply interruptions:
- Atteridgeville (all extensions)
- Atteridgeville 744-JR
- Christoburg
- Claudius and Claudius Ext 1
- Elandsfontein 352-JR
- Erasmia
- Kwaggasrand
- Laudium and Laudium Ext 1, 2, 3, and 4
- Mooiplaats 355-JR
- Pretoria Town and Townlands 351-JR
- Saulsville
- Schurveberg 488-JQ
- Skurweplaas 353-JR
- West Park
This emergency shutdown comes in the wake of Johannesburg’s 86-hour water blackout, which disrupted supply to areas reliant on the Eikenhof and Zwartkopjes systems last week.
While Johannesburg Water has since managed to restore supply to most regions, Tshwane’s announcement casts a dark spotlight on the continued strain on the province’s water infrastructure.
The City of Tshwane issued an apology to residents, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the outage.
“The City of Tshwane sincerely apologises for the inconvenience that may be encountered during this planned water interruption,” the City’s statement concluded.
