South African media personality and businesswoman Bonang Matheba has been reeled in to host the 2022 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) taking place in Lagos, Nigeria, this May.
Bonang Matheba returns to awards hosting
Matheba returns to the live audience setting after two years of no action, thanks for the most part, to the COVID-19 pandemic. During a recent trip to South Africa, the House of BNG frontwoman sat down for a tell-all with Drum Magazine and laid out her plans as a New York migrant.
“For people like me who relied on live shows, concerts, and such, we were affected by Covid-19 and it feels good to be back in front of a live audience, doing what I love. I am home, but I am still very much a New York girl. I will be going back in a couple of days,” she said at the time.
Matheba’s trip back to the US will be filled with pitstops, one of which is her favourite African city, Lagos, where she’s been for the past two weeks.
The 2022 AMVCA, which take place on Saturday 14 May 2022, will be a familiar setting for Matheba, whose resume includes hosting the 2016 MTV Africa Music Awards, the BET Awards in that same year, and the pre-shows for the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards.
Her co-host, IK Osakioduwa, will be a familiar colleague too. In a statement, Matheba described the hosting gig as inevitable.
“It’s been a long time coming. It’s also an honor. Any single stage I get to step on is an honor. I’ve always wanted to work with IK. I am a huge fan of his. So, I’m looking forward to that too”, she said.
The 2022 AMVCAs will be broadcast on all Africa Magic channels available on DStv. The pre-show begins at 17:00 on Saturday 14 May 2022.
