The Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court in Cape Town was set on fire on Saturday night, 21 December 2024, following violent unrest.
Bishop Lavis Magistrate’s Court burned to the ground: Here’s what we know
According to Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus McKenzie, the incident began after a raid by the Anti-Gang Unit at the home of an alleged gang leader.
McKenzie stated that rumours circulating in the community suggested the individual may have been assaulted during the operation or collapsed and died.
“We know that a little earlier in the evening, there was an Anti-Gang Unit operation that took place at a known gangster’s home in the area,” McKenzie confirmed.
The news of the death reportedly triggered widespread chaos in Bishop Lavis. Residents blocked roads, stoned vehicles, and stormed the court premises.
An angry mob forced their way onto the court’s premises, breaking through the front gate and shattering several windows. The mob reportedly set tyres and chairs alight near the front entrance, resulting in significant fire damage to the court’s front section.
Two security guards on duty at the time informed the police that they witnessed the events unfold, but they were unable to intervene.
Cape Town police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that cases of arson and public violence are being investigated.
Van Wyk has called on the public to provide any information that may assist in identifying the individuals responsible for the attack.
“The sad reality of our deep rooted issues [is] when communities destroy the very building they hope will protect them,” McKenzie said.
