Big Sean has been making headlines on his recent media circuit but things didn’t go as planned when, during an interview with Essence, he drew ire from social media over his comments about black women.
What did Big Sean say about black women?
The virtual conversation between Sean and Essence senior editor Brande Victorian was largely centred around the rapper’s reflection on season two of Twenties, a hit BET comedy-drama where he stars as Tristan.
While much of the discussion was around the nuances between his real self and the character he portrays which, in the series is a Zen love interest of Nia, played by Gabrielle Graham, Sean left social media divided when he touched on the role black women play in his life.
Interestingly, Sean was responding to a question on what his experience was like working in a women-dominant and led environment, when he said:
“Women are magical. Black women are the closest thing to God. Y’all be creating life. It’s funny how this doctor broke it down to me. He was like we all come out of a Black whole just like the universe was birthed and it’s really deep when you get down to it.”

Suffice it to say, many women of colour took to Twitter to share their displeasure with the apparent ‘bait’ Sean used in the interview.
At the centre of the disgruntlement, it seems, were claims that Sean has not dated a black woman in… forever, and yet he had the ‘audacity’ to put them on a pedestal he would supposedly never pursue.
Here are some of the reactions that followed the viral clip.
i’m convinced celebs now pander to black women because we are the largest group of consumers and we do free martketing often it’s not lost on me all these mf love black women now trying to rebrand and shit (& i personally like big sean’s music but i see what’s going on)

The rapper was forced to surface online and furnish a response, making it clear that his black mother and grandmother are, in his view, the closest thing to God.
