Positive affirmations are a gentle way to remind yourself of the light within you that will always exist. Affirmations allows you to build a healthy and stable relationship with yourself.
What are affirmations?
Mindtools.com describes affirmations as “positive statements that can help you to challenge and overcome self-sabotaging and negative thoughts. When you repeat them often and believe in them, you can start to make positive changes.”
Much like those ongoing pep talks you have with yourself in front of the mirror or the “I’m going to ace this!” hype session for that job interview – affirmations require repetition.
“Water what waters you, and let go of everything that leaves you feeling thirsty”.
Repeating an affirmation such as “I am divinely guided and protected” for instance will reinforce a positive mindset. You’ll start believing that you are indeed divinely guided and protected. Words hold power and it’s how we speak to ourselves that play a great role in how we think and feel.
“Affirmations mean positivity and light, then overcoming self-sabotage. I have a huge weakness of being my own enemy before I could even execute anything. So, they keep me in the right mindset and shape.” says Mental Health Advocate and Radical Feminist Naledytheactivist.
Naledy practices affirmations such as:
“Water what waters you, and let go of everything that leaves you feeling thirsty”
“Spirituality requires that I am authentically me in each moment”.
These push her towards what she’d love to achieve for herself.
Do affirmations work?
With intention it does. With anything really, you need to set an intention behind it to believe it’s going to actually work right? Affirmations are like manifestation tools, and with every intention set behind your words it can manifest into reality.
Below are pointers that can make this practice effective for you.
Create your own
Affirmations are found almost everywhere, on Instagram, on T-shirts etc. While you can use those it’s best to create some that best suit your own goals. Get creative with your own. Healthline.com notes that many people link affirmations to their core values.
For example if you’ve been feeling unmotivated and worried about finances soothe these negative feelings with an affirmation such as “I am where I need to be. I have nothing to worry about because I am always protected and always guided.”
Practice affirming yourself
Make it a routine by starting with 3 – 5 minutes as you repeat affirmations when you wake up and when you go to bed. Repeat each of them for about 10 minutes. Feel every word that you say to yourself.
Soon it’ll become a healthy habit you’ve adapted.
