South Africa’s Under-20 squad will be chasing revenge and their first ever title when they take on Morocco in the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations final on Sunday.
Amajita are making only their second ever appearance in the final of the tournament, with the only other effort coming back in 1997. Their opponents on that occasion? Yep, you guessed it: Morocco. That was the last time the North African side clinched silverware at this level, so the final is all set for a tense finish.
South Africa’s young guns won plenty of fans with their performances thus far. Having started their campaign with a defeat to Egypt, they held their nerve to top Group A with some clutch performances en route to the final.
The Under 20s secured wins against Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and a draw against Zambia put them on course for the final berth. In the knockouts, a win over Democratic Republic of Congo, which also secured their place at the Under-20 World Cup in Chile later this year.
Only Nigeria stood in the way of Amajita’s final spot, but a 1-0 win was enough to secure their final place.
