Lady Gaga announced she will star alongside Joaquin Phoenix in the upcoming sequel to the Oscar-winning psychological thriller Joker. The actress posted the title for Joker: Folie à Deux and its release date on her social media.
She also posted a short video of her and Joker’s silhouette dancing to Cheek to Cheek. This song was famously covered by Gaga alongside legendary singer Tony Bennett.
Details on her character are being kept under wraps, but Joker is known for his on-off abusive relationship with Harleen Quinzel (Harley Quinn), his psychiatrist. It is rumoured that Lady Gaga will portray Quinn in the film.
Joker 2 is set for an October 4, 2024 release, which is exactly five years after the original.
Here’s what we know about the ‘Joker’ sequel
Director Todd Phillips has co-written the script for the sequel and will return as director. Phoenix will resume his role as Arthur Fleck, aka Joker.
Folie à deux is a rare psychiatric syndrome also known as shared psychosis. This is likely a hint at the co-dependent relationship between Joker and Harley Quinn.
Phoenix first played the role in the 2019 film Joker, which earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Variety has reported the new production will be a musical. Many are hoping that Gaga will play Harley Quinn due to her musical abilities and performances such as A Star Is Born.
Joker was supposed to be the only film. After the movie generated more than $1 billion globally and earned Phoenix an Oscar, a sequel was set to be created.
The film is supposedly being set in and around Arkham Asylum.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gaga’s version of the infamous anti-hero will exist in a different universe than actor Margot Robbie’s Quinn. Robbie played Harley in:
- Suicide Squad’(2016)
- Birds of Prey‘ (2020)
- The Suicide Squad‘ (2020)
