Cyrano will see Peter Dinklage take on a challenging lead role in the drama musical that’s already competing at a high level at prestigious awards.
The Joe Wright-directed drama adaptation of a classic French musical of the same name written by Dinklage’s wife Erica Schmidt was nominated at the Golden Globes in two categories. Dinklage was outperformed by Andrew Garfield who took home the Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category for his work on Tick, Tick… Boom.
The film, which is yet to be released for global audiences, also lost out to Steven Spielberg’s The West Side Story in the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category.
However, an opportunity to snatch a win still awaits, since Cyrano is shortlisted at the 2022 Oscars.
Cyrano synopsis: What is the movie about?
Cyrano is based on a classic 1897 play that was first written by Edmond Rostand, and later repurposed by Dinklage’s wife, Erica Schmidt.
The movie follows the life of Cyrano de Bergerac, a writer and poet who, in his works and encounters with people, expresses self-doubt because of his physical appearance.
Cyrano falls deeply in love with his friend Roxanne. However, she, unfortunately, has her eyes set on another suitor, Christian, who, unlike Cyrano, is a handsome soldier.
The story envelopes into a relationship between Cyrano and Christian, who may have the physical attributes to please Roxannes’s lusting, but not the words to capture her heart.
Cyrano ends up aiding Christian by ghostwriting his love letters and poems to Roxanne. Of course, this all comes to a head in classic musical style.
