Hannes Van Der Walt was crowned Mr South Africa 2020 (Mr SA) on Saturday, putting an end to a pageant that has been hampered by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.
Here’s your Mr South Africa 2020
As reported by Channel24, 2019’s pageant king Heinrich Gabler was crowned in an upscale event that was held in Camps Bay, one of the wealthiest neighbourhoods in Africa.
However, due to safety issues related to the pandemic, the Mr SA pageant organisation opted to make the announcement of Van Der Walt’s crowning on a virtual live stream.
This is a snippet of the announcement posted by Mr South Africa on Instagram:
The organisation has halted plans on sending our Mr SA to compete in international pageants due to uncertainty with cross-border travel in these trying times.
Everything we know about Hannes Van Der Walt
Just like Shudufhadzo Musida, there is a lot we don’t know about our pageant king. In deciding on Mr SA, judges Aretha Bauwens, Saskia Riley and Storm Johnson were looking for “the best male ambassador for our country, a real-life everyday superhero.”
We took the courtesy of digging into Mr SA’s background to find out everything you may want to know about our new pageant ambassador.
His personal life
Van Der Walt is a 39-year-old father of two and husband to Natasha Marais Van Der Walt.
In an interview with IOL, the Kempton Park resident revealed that his goal is to use the Mr SA platform to “raise better men, to raise better dads and in doing so, create a better South Africa.”
What does he do?
Outside of the runway struts that won him the 2020 pageant title, Van Der Walt is a musician. This is a music video of the 39-year-old’s performance of his 2017 release Gebreekte Glas.
