Chicco Twala speaks on Longwe involvement in Senzo Meyiwa murder
Longwe’s name surfaced during the ongoing murder trial, with the defence for one of the accused claiming Longwe was the one who pulled the trigger.
Speaking outside of a Randburg court, where his son appeared for a theft charge, Chicco strongly denied these claims, stating:
“If someone says my son stole from him, I would say yes. But if someone says my son shot someone, Longwe will never do that. He is not that kind of a character.”
He added:
“He has never carried a gun in his entire life. The defence in the Senzo Meyiwa case, especially the ones who are accusing him of shooting, they are just psychopaths. They are mad.”
Longwe was in court on Wednesday after his father accused him and his brother, Sello Twala, of breaking into his studio and stealing equipment worth thousands of rands.
Chicco has been vocal about Longwe’s struggles with drug addiction, which he believes is at the root of his son’s ongoing issues.
Did Longwe’s gun shoot Senzo Meyiwa?
During a court session at the Pretoria High Court last week, Advocate Thulani Mngomezulu, who represents one of the five accused, alleged that a witness would testify that Longwe shot Meyiwa using his father’s 9mm pistol.
However, ballistic expert Lt-Col Christian Mangena testified that tests on Chicco Twala’s gun proved that it was not the weapon used in the crime.
In another surprising claim, Mngomezulu suggested that Longwe had shot himself in the foot during a struggle with Meyiwa before fatally shooting the soccer star.
He stated that Longwe later had the bullet removed at South Rand Hospital.
These claims remain unverified, and the trial continues as new evidence is brought forward.
Senzo Meyiwa was shot at the Vosloorus home of his girlfriend, singer Kelly Khumalo, in 2014.
Alongside Longwe, other people present at the time included Kelly Khumalo, her sister Zandile, their mother, and two of Meyiwa’s friends.
