Why are people angered by Minnie Dlamini?
On Tuesday, the Homeground co-host took to social media to flaunt her new hairstyle, the Bantu knots. The general reaction was as she expected, her peers loved it.
The likes of Kelly Khumalo, rapstress Rouge and Rachel Kolisi were stunned by Dlamini’s natural beauty.
However, most people were taken aback by the caption that accompanied the image she posted on Twitter and Instagram.
On both platforms, Dlamini referred to her hairstyle, mostly dawned by women of colour, as ‘ghetto’.
Are Bantu knots ghetto?
While the 30-yer-old has yet to defend herself or, at the very least, respond to the backlash, she may have used the reference as a figure of speech to show off her versatility.
However, her ‘ghetto’ comment was specifically related to her Bantu knots. Social media reacted to what was implied; that Bantu knots, a hairstyle historically linked to black women, was of a lesser class.
Sure enough, the virtual walls came tumbling for Dlamini. Social media users from all corners of the world descended on the celebrity’s timeline and called her out for her apparent ignorance.
At a time when the world is dealing with racial injustices, this was perceived as highly insensitive and downright disrespectful to black people and their customs.
