Derek Watts obituary
Derek Watts was a dedicated journalist whose illustrious career spanned several decades.
Beginning in 1974 as a cub reporter for the (then) Rhodesia Herald, Derek’s journey in journalism was marked by his unwavering commitment.
Despite his significant service in the army as an Adjutant and Company Commander, Derek continued to ascend the journalistic ladder, earning his place as the group’s rugby writing specialist.
Derek’s path led him to SABC TV News, where he spent four years as a sub-editor, before embarking on a refreshing hiatus as a squash court manager and coach in Durban.
Yet, the allure of the newsroom drew him back, this time as a sports anchor on TV news.
It wasn’t long before Derek’s talents were recognised, and the SABC initiated a dedicated sports program.
Thus, Top Sport was born, and Derek’s seasoned presence was chosen as the anchor, alternating with Martin Locke.
In 1988, a pivotal moment arrived when Derek received a call from the esteemed producer Bill Faure.
This call heralded the inception of a groundbreaking show on a nascent channel, one without a name as yet.
That channel would become M-Net, and the show, Carte Blanche.
Derek’s role as co-anchor, alongside Ruda Landman, would forever shape the landscape of investigative journalism in South Africa.
Now celebrating its 35th year, Carte Blanche has etched its name in broadcasting history, achieving numerous local and international accolades.
Beyond his professional achievements, Derek cherished his family deeply. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Belinda, and their two children β Tyrone and Kirsty.
Derek’s influence extended beyond the newsroom.
He skillfully assumed roles as an MC, guest speaker, media trainer, and presenter of corporate videos.
His insightful talks delved into the essence of 35 years of Carte Blanche and the dynamic evolution of the media landscape in Southern Africa over more than three decades.
