As Africans, there is a lot to be proud about on the return of the comedy classic Coming 2 America.
Rhythms of Zamunda: South Africa shines on Coming 2 America
If it is not for the momentous role played by Nomzamo Mbatha in her ‘big-screen‘ debut, then it’s the appearance of South African stars like Nasty C, Prince Kaybee and Msaki on the Eddie Murphy-produced movie’s soundtrack.
The 16-track compilation album accompanies the movie, which premieres on Amazon Prime Video on Friday 5 March. Nasty C and Ari Lennox led the way with the project’s lead single Black & White, a song that gives the listener a glimpse into the possibilities of love when two people stop complicating it.
“I am honoured to be representing Africa in such a monumental moment, celebrating the best of black creatives,” the rapper said about the compilation.

The album also features appearances from Africa’s biggest talent. From Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage and the late DJ Arafat from Côte d’Ivoire, to the likes of Fally Ipupa from the Democratic Republic of Congo, the 16-track LP is full of African flare.
For Def Jam Africa, the UMG subsidiary that handled the compilation, providing the rhythms of Zamunda was important for the label to be involved “because the first film was so legendary to Africans in the diaspora.”
“The film franchise is tongue-in-cheek but conveys a rich quality of life in Africa. That is reflected in the music on Rhythms of Zamunda. We wanted to represent some of the sounds that are relevant, impactful and current on the continent,” Def Jam Africa and UMG South Africa chief executive Sipho Dlamini said.
