On Sunday The Department of Basic Education announced that applications for teacher assistant and general assistant positions open on Monday.
As this is part of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI), which seeks to combat the growing rate of youth unemployment in South Africa, the department is looking to recruit 287 000 unemployed young people.
What are the requirements for the teacher assistant position?
There are general requirements for both assistant job placements but, there are also specific prerequisites to qualify for the teacher assistant position.
Generally, you are eligible to apply if you are between the ages of 18 and 35, and not receiving any government grant or enrolled in any educational training. If you want to be a teacher assistant, you need to have a matric certificate with an English pass of NQF level 4 but, levels 6 and 7 will be an advantage. However, for the general assistant position, you do not need to have a matric certificate.

Firstly, all applications must be submitted by 3 October 2021. You can submit your application on www.sayouth.mobi after you have created a profile. Make sure you stay ready and prepared because once you have been shortlisted these are documents that will be needed from you.

- Testimonials (former school, church leader, local chief, etc)
- Police clearance certificate
- Affidavit/declaration from applicant stating that he/she has no criminal record while awaiting police clearance
- Certified matric certificate with NRQ level 4,6,7 if required
- Certified copy of identity document
