Decorating with mirrors does not only add an impact to your home decor, but it also brings light and creates the illusion of more space in a room. Additionally, the way you place mirrors can eloquently reflect some of the interesting design choices in your home.
Five ways to decorate with mirrors
Therefore, this article will be giving you five tips on how you can stylishly incorporate mirrors into your home decor.
Install a mirror wall
A full mirror wall can be scary to commit to at first, however, according to Vern Yip, designer, HGTV host and author of Vacation at Home and Design Wise, small spaces are the place to use big mirrors. He says there is a common misconception of using small mirrors in tiny spaces, but “large ones are the best way to go”.
In more compact rooms, big mirrors create an illusion of a bigger space, however, it is important to use thinner frames because bulky ones can overwhelm the room if it is already not big.
Make sure the placement of your mirror is maximised
Placing your decorative mirror in a place that effortlessly connects with the details around the house puts everything together.
Interior designer Jenna Choate and co-founder of Interior fox says placing your mirror where it naturally catches light from a window is the best way to do it.
Pick a mirror design that looks like a window
If you are working with a particularly dark room, choosing a mirror that looks like a window and stands next to it also adds more brightness and space. A simple way is by placing your mirrors on the wall between windows to expand the light throughout the room.
Interior designer Will Taylor suggests putting your mirrors where they reflect the atmosphere of the room. For example, Taylor said he placed his bathroom mirror right in front of a candle holder and every time the candle is on, the flickering flame creates a warm and cosy environment.
Create an art wall with mirrors
The art of mirrors is that they come in different shapes and forms, which gives them a creative use of playing with contrasting figures and structures to add dimension to a space. Yip says you can also mix in your mirrors with art to fill up any empty spaces which also breaks up the room and adds more light.
However, the interior designer emphasises getting the correct height of mirrors because when hung uniformly they make the room feel bigger.
Yip’s a pro tip on correctly placing your mirrors is “if you have a minimum of a 2-inch border from the edge of the frame to edge of wall or ceiling,”
Choose mirrors that match your home decor style
Just like art, mirrors have different decorative frames that can add details to a home. Therefore, using one that adds to the design contributes to the space without making it feel cluttered.
Interior designer Robert A. Downs says if you have a more modern design style she recommends staying away from thick wooden frames and opting for a more thin metal frame.
