Seven hiking trails to experience waterfalls and water pools
Get out your hiking boots and take advantage of these hiking trails on an easy escape away from the daily Cape Town hustle while you’re met with some time in nature. These seven hiking trails will lead you to crisp airs and your new favourite waterfalls, streams and lakes.
Krom River
The Krom River route is found in the Limietberg Nature Reserve and crosses two rivers before you’ll reach the waterfall and pool. The white footprint markings along the trail will guide you to alluring mountain views and into a green haven. The trail goes on for about five hours and is a good pick for an active walk plus the reward of a refreshing swim.
Groot Windhoek
This route calls for a walk through a history lane. The Groot Windhoek holds a strong heritage to its name as you’ll find ancient rock paintings of the indigenous San and Khoi people. The trail shows off its unique rock formations, clear water pools and is perfect for a group hike.
Crystal Pools
To reach the Crystal Pools located in the Steenbras Nature Reserve, it might be moderately challenging but a challenge spices things up right? Just remember to take it easy. Stop by the rock pools on your trail and the hike will feel less of a challenge after all.
Cape Nature reserve
This must-visit reserve is located on the southeast corner of the Cape Peninsula. There’s a variety of hiking trails to pick from in this large ecological landform and you’re sure to spend a day filling your camera. You’ll be meeting with fynbos, empty beaches and various tidal pools to take a swim in.
Kogelberg
The Koelberg Nature Reserves homes this treasured gem. The Palmiet River gives you a secluded experience of plant life, mountain peaks and fresh waters that any hiker will rate top notch. This is a long trail so be prepared to book your whole day as filled. Take all your necessities, start early and don’t forget to pack swimwear for your awaited swim.
Boesmanskloof
With the starting point of this trail in the little town of McGregor, Boesmanskloof takes you through the picturesque Oakes fall that is a beautiful display of various pools and waterfalls. The hike is an all-day trail (lasting 6-7 hours) so make sure you arrange transport back to the starting point.
Silvermine
Take a 30 – 40 minutes drive out of the CBD to enjoy the Silvermine Reservoir. Hikes such as Elephant’s Eye Cave, Silvermine Ridge and Sentinel View will lead you to a fun swim in calm waters. You’re welcome to set up a cute little picnic there too. It’s a great pick day out in nature.
