South Africa’s health department has confirmed that in the last 24 hours, six new patients have tested positive for Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
Coronavirus spreads in South Africa: 13 new cases recorded
In a statement issued by the department on social media, it was confirmed that three provinces, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape, have reported cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours.
“The Minister of Health wishes to inform the public that 6 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed. This takes the total number of coronavirus positive patients in South Africa to 13,” the department noted.
Which provinces have cases of coronavirus in SA?
KwaZulu-Natal
A couple from Hilton, north of Durban, that was part of a group of 10 travellers who returned from Italy on Sunday 1 March has been receiving treatment in self-isolation.
Four of the travellers also tested positive for the virus after the group was tracked down and placed in quarantine for testing.
According to the department, a 40-year-old male who recently returned from Portugal on 7 March also tested positive for the virus, taking the tally of cases in KZN to seven.
Gauteng
In Gauteng, three new cases of coronavirus have popped up in the region, according to the health department.
From what we have gathered from the statement, this is the latest information on the patients and where they may have contracted the virus from:
- 33-year-old female who travelled to Italy and returned on 1 March;
- a couple (34-year-old male and 33-year-old female) who travelled to Germany. They returned to South Africa on Monday 9 March.
- a 57-year-old male who travelled to Austria and Italy. He returned to South Africa on Monday 9 March.
Western Cape
The Western Cape has recorded its first coronavirus case. The patient is a 36-year-old male travelled to multiple countries which include, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Turkey. He returned to South Africa on Monday 9 March
