These D.I.Y hacks turn self-care into an easy, affordable and accessible way to take care of yourself.
Self-care made easy
Self-care is the conscious act of tending to your emotional, physical and mental health. While it feels good to spoil yourself, it doesn’t have to always involve spending tons of money – especially when you’re going to break the bank doing so.
A lot of the ingredients around our homes and in our fridges can nourish us in significant ways. Turn to the D.I.Y. route as we make use of what we have.
D.I.Y self-care tips
Feet: Pink Himalayan salt soak-off
Pink Himalayan salt is a pure salt used to detoxify the body, heal scabs and scarring and stabilises the PH balance in our cells too. Do a foot soak-off to pamper and moisturise your feet.
How to:
Add the salt in warm water with magnesium flakes if desired.
Soak your feet for 10-20 minutes.
Rinse and moisturise.
Legs: Brown sugar scrub
A sugar scrub is eco-friendly, easy to make and edible too. To remove excess dirt, ingrown hairs or dark spots from your legs try a brown sugar scrub. It leaves a smooth glow on your skin. To achieve this The Simple Veganista gives a ‘how to’ below.
How to:
Take one cup of sugar and place it in a container that you’ll store this mixture in.
Add in 3-5 tablespoons of the desired oil you’ll be using (avocado, jojoba, coconut etc) and mix it.
Your mixture should be a sandy consistency to achieve an effective scrub.
Face: Apple cider vinegar toner
Apple cider vinegar is great as a face toner. The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar helps control bacteria build-up that causes acne. It also lightens dark spots in the face. Taste of Home says it takes about three to four weeks to see results.
How to:
Mix raw apple cider vinegar in a bowl with water.
Soak a cotton bud in the water and dap your face.
Leave it on for 10 minutes and rinse thereafter.
Hair: Essential oils scalp rub
This is like a mini-spa session as you breathe in the aromatic scent of essential oils while massaging your scalp. Essential oils have a ton of anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties making them a great base before you shampoo your scalp and hair.
How to:
Mix several drops of your desired oil into 3-5 drops of carrier oil (olive or coconut).
Massage it into your scalp and leave it in for about 10 minutes.
Wash it out with shampoo and style your hair as per usual.
