The latest internet craze that’s getting a lot of buzz is the BMW concept SUV that changes colour.
How this BMW concept SUV changes colour
At the press of a button, the BMW iX Flow electric SUV concept adjusts its hues, transforming from white, to grey to black, and white again in a matter of seconds. Marvel Cinematic Universe geeks will recognise this optical illusion from Tony Stark and Peter Parker’s nanotech suits.
This is not a sample of some futuristic paint. Instead, the concept SUV’s body is fitted with E Ink’s specially formed electronic paper display technology.
The iX Flow that was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2022) was, according to E Ink, wrapped with “a design film developed by E Ink for the architecture and design markets.”
“E Ink Prism is fully programmable, giving BMW the creative freedom to customize the patterns and materials,” the global commercial leader in digital paper technology said in a statement.
The innovative colour transformation seeks to achieve more than the jaw-dropping spectacle it invokes. In fact, the white-to-black transformation is an alternative method to saving energy.
Naturally, on sunny days, a white exterior would reflect sunlight and, conversely, “a black exterior on cold days would absorb the sunlight.”
This could reduce the amount of energy the vehicle uses for heating and cooling the interior.
“E Ink’s color changing technology is technically amazing. Seeing it formed on our highly curved surfaces is absolutely unexpected and seemingly magical,” Head of Project for the BMW iX Flow Stella Clarke said.
The BMX iX Flow will be on display at CES 2022 until Friday 7 January 2022, at the BMW Pavilion.
Tim O’Malley, Assistant Vice President of E Ink’s US Regional Business Unit said this about the innovation:
“This concept car with BMW is an amazing display of how surfaces of the future will transform to personalize, customize and provide information. Because E Ink is incredibly low power and durable, we can put our display technology on almost any surface, transforming a once static space into something dynamic and spectacular – and sustainable.”
