Anti-ageing tips are much sought-after, even amongst the younger generations. A study that examined women’s behaviour towards their skincare showed that 30% of women under 35 regularly use anti-wrinkle products. And 28% of women under 25 were constantly worried about ageing signs showing up on their faces.
For older generations, a study showed that the worry of ageing mainly revolved around the uncertainty of the physical life changes that are yet to come. This was because the anxiety of getting older overpowered the will to learn about the nature of ageing from a more positive perspective.
Ageing is inevitable, but it is also a beautiful part of life that symbolises life lessons that have turned into wisdom and passed down to younger generations. Moreover, wanting to feel and look youthful is not a bad thing, as long it is an act of self-care and not a response to the anxiety of getting older.
Anti-ageing tips you need to know
These five tips are meant to protect and introduce simple changes to the way you take care of your skin.
Stop using skincare products that sting or burn
According to the American Association of Dermatology AAD, when products burn, it usually means your skin is irritated, and irritation can make the skin look older.
Protect your skin with sunscreen every day
A study by the National Centre of Biochemistry Information had subjects apply a 30 Sun Protection Factor (SPF) sunscreen for one year. By week 12, there were improvements in skin texture, pigmentation, and the wrinkles flattened out by 20%.
Therefore, applying sunscreen does not only prevent premature skin ageing, it is also a staple product that has many protective benefits.
Wash with a gentle cleanser
A gentle cleanser preserves the skin barrier and protects it from any dehydration damage. If the cleanser leaves your skin feeling squeaky clean then “you’re stripping it of necessary natural oils, and it will eventually feel dry, tight, and itchy” says, Jennifer Linder, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the University of California.
Always moisturise
When you get older your skin produces less sebum, which means it gets easily dry. According to Healthline, one of the biggest causes of fine lines is poor hydration, so make sure you take time to pat your moisturiser on your skin to ensure maximum hydration.
Sleep on a silk pillowcase
Believe it or not, silk pillowcases can prevent wrinkles. According to Dr Neal Schultz, a New York City-based dermatologist and author of It’s Not Just About Wrinkles, silk pillowcases provide “a smooth surface with very little friction”, which means less tugging of the skin.
Additionally, cotton pillowcases absorb all the face creams you have put on your skin, meaning your skin does not get all the nutrients it needs. On the flip side, silk pillowcases retain your skin’s moisture and keep it looking healthy and supple.
