Wright will be remembered for her soul catalogue
Soul music lovers will remember Wright for her classic hit song Clean Up Woman, which became a Top 5 smash in the 1980s. However, what many would not know is that the 66-year-old was a singing sensation since the age of 14.
Wright was 14 years old when she released her first album, with the standout record Girls Can’t Do What Guys Can Do. The singer would go on to perform on many stages under the family group Echoes of Joy, until 1985 when she started her own label.
In 1988, she would be etched in history as the first woman to get a gold plaque for 500 000 records sold under her own label. Wright’s music remains relevant to this day and has been reworked by the likes of Mary J Blige (Real Love), Sublime (Get Out) and Afrika Bambaataa (Zulu War Chant).
