Attorney Tony Buzbee, representing the plaintiff in a civil lawsuit against Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter, has levelled allegations of bribery in a post on social media.
Tony Buzbee exposes recordings of alleged Jay-Z bribery
According to the Houston lawyer, recorded conversations between individuals claiming to be investigators reveal attempts to bribe his law firm’s current and former clients to bring legal action against him.
Buzbee shared portions of a transcript purportedly from the recordings, which state:
“In a couple of days or maybe by next week, anyone Googling Buzbee and his company – his practice – are going into litigation. Okay? What we’re trying to do is, we are trying put this thing together for the company that we’re working for– We could get you paid, . . . you could get money right soon, you know? We gave this kid 1,000 bucks to start yesterday just to get him on the right path. At the end of the day, this is going to go through the courts, Buzbee is getting sued . . .”
Buzbee claims that these alleged attempts to pay clients to sue his firm constitute a crime.
He has not provided details of any formal complaint filed in response to these claims.
Latest development in the Jay-Z lawsuit
In a letter filed on Monday, 9 December 2024, Alex Spiro, Jay-Z’s attorney, escalated efforts to challenge the plaintiff’s anonymity in the lawsuit.
The letter requested that the court deny the plaintiff’s application to proceed anonymously and dismiss the case entirely.
Spiro argued that the plaintiff’s anonymity violates Rule 10(a) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, which requires the names of all parties in a lawsuit to be disclosed.
According to Spiro, this anonymity hinders Jay-Z’s ability to defend himself effectively and exacerbates the case’s media attention, which he described as a coordinated campaign of defamation.
The letter also alleged procedural improprieties, accusing the plaintiff’s counsel, Tony Buzbee, of filing an “amended complaint” to escalate media coverage and forcing a settlement.
Spiro dismissed the lawsuit’s claims as unfounded and argued that the plaintiff’s allegations lacked credible evidence.
The filing further stressed Jay-Z’s denial of the accusations, reiterating that he has no involvement in any related criminal investigations and labelling the lawsuit as a baseless attempt to tarnish his reputation.
The lawsuit, filed under New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act, accuses Jay-Z and Sean “Diddy” Combs of sexually assaulting the plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, at an afterparty following the MTV Video Music Awards in September 2000.
According to the lawsuit, Jane Doe, who was 13 at the time, was allegedly drugged and assaulted by the two men and an unidentified female celebrity.
The plaintiff claims she was lured into a limousine by one of Diddy’s drivers and taken to a party at a private residence. There, the lawsuit alleges, the events leading to her assault occurred.
The filing further alleges that Jane Doe was forced to sign a document under duress and was dropped off at a gas station afterwards, where she contacted her father for assistance.
The plaintiff did not report the incident to authorities at the time, citing fear and confusion.
Jay-Z has vehemently denied all allegations, referring to the claims as “heinous and untrue.”
He has also accused Buzbee of attempting to extort him by demanding a settlement before filing the lawsuit.
The rapper-turned-business mogul stated that he is committed to clearing his name and exposing what he calls a calculated smear campaign.
