If you were on your streaming service’s ‘Browse’ tab on Friday, then Few Good Things by Saba would have been wedged between greatly anticipated drops from industry juggernauts.
In this scenario, regular fans of the Chitown native would have, without a second delayed, pressed ‘play’. But, what about the random scroller who, in the midst of sifting through the week’s new catalogue, just so happened to stumble on a Few Good Things‘ art cover?
Saba ‘Few Good Things’ album review
An interactive portrait shot of an aged man, hidden behind swaying flowers that, in all likelihood sprouted from the cracked concrete of West Chicago projects. Maybe this in an overanalysis of the album art’s intended portrayal. Nonetheless, the intrigue was enough to warrant an escape into the vast imagination.
An escape, after all, is a fitting description of the mood on Few Good Things.
Saba’s third album represents his position in a career kicked off with a statement debut Bucket List Project (2016). He was different back then, and nothing much has changed, from a philosophical standing.
“For so long, I’ve waited for people to understand our place in this industry, our art, and what we represent. I’ve realised now after being ‘here’ for almost 10 years that I should have just defined this s*** for you. It’s not that I feel completely misunderstood, it’s that I want to create space for myself and this experience to be represented wholly,” he said, expanding the ideas behind the album’s intro.
On Few Good Things, Saba invites bespoke guests such as Black Thought, Krayzie Bone, 6LACK and G Herbo into his carefully crafted and intentional space.
Survivor’s Guilt is, for geeks of this genre, almost like a ‘homecoming’ moment previously felt when Kanye West appeared on Common’s The Food in 2004.
Saba rarely strays away from the melancholic mood of the album, and for first time listeners, the project is a great introduction to the artist.
His core fanbase tends to agree too. Here are some of those reactions:
Literally after every song on this new Saba album we say "this is the best one so far" 😂 pic.twitter.com/PiQJe807FI
