Legal actions stemming from ‘Not Like Us’
Lamar’s Not Like Us drew attention not only for its popularity but also for its content, which included ‘pdf’ accusations directed at Drake.
The lyrics prompted legal filings from Drake in Texas and New York, where he accused Lamar and Universal Music Group (UMG) of defamation and misconduct.
According to Drake’s filings, he sought to investigate UMG’s alleged involvement in boosting the popularity of the track through prohibited practices like payola and influencer marketing.
The filings also included claims of racketeering under RICO statutes.
Legal analysts have stated that diss tracks, as a genre, often feature exaggerated rhetoric, which could make it difficult to establish defamation claims.
Drake’s filings also accused UMG of removing copyright restrictions and using automated systems to enhance the track’s reach.
The petitions aim to secure pre-litigation discovery to gather further evidence.
