DONDA finally surfaced on digital streaming services after months of speculation and from the perspective of fans who’ve been anxiously awaiting its release, the 27-track project went beyond meeting expectations.
DONDA drops with more drama from Kanye West
On Sunday, much to everyone’s surprise, Mr West’s 10th solo studio album appeared on streaming apps without an art cover.
The black canvas did not discourage anyone from hitting ‘play’, despite claims from the Chitown artist that the album dropped without his final approval.
“Universal [Music Group] put my album out without my approval and they blocked ‘Jail 2’ from being on the album,” he wrote in an Instagram post.
This, Kanye posted after he deleted screenshots of a text exchange he had with Def Jam A&R Abou Thiam and DaBaby, where it’s claimed the South Carolina was being purposefully duped by his people.
Arnold Taylor, DaBaby’s manager, later responded to claims made by Ye’s camp outrightly denying any involvement in black-balling his artist from featuring on DONDA.
“I woke up this morning to this social media bull—t. I never got a call from [Kanye West]. I just received it today and cleared it in two seconds,” he wrote in an Instagram post.
Artists snubbed from DONDA lash out at Kanye West
Despite the minor setback, DaBaby’s verse appeared on an edited version of the album. This can be attributed to West’s assertion that the embattled rapper had to feature on his album since he was the only high-profile celebrity to publicly show him support during his 2020 presidential bid.
West, however, has inherited more beef from artists who never made it onto his album. Chris Brown took to his Instagram to publicly call the 44-year-old billionaire a “h–” after it was apparent that his contributions on New Again were scrapped from the final cut.
Soulja Boy also lashed out at Mr West for being cut out the album. The Rick N Morty star leaked a text exchange that shows how Kanye reeled him in to a studio session that, in the end, turned out to be a futile excercise:
This nigga Kanye smh. Tell homie dont hit my phone no more. pic.twitter.com/jAoumHDz4F
