Shawn ‘Jay-Z‘ Carter did not hold back his tongue in reaction to the public fallout from a damning civil lawsuit listing him as a participant in the rape and sexual assault of a minor, 24 years ago.
Jay-Z accuses Texas lawyer of manipulating victimhood for greed
In a statement, the self-made billionaire from Brooklyn, who just celebrated his 55th birthday on Wednesday, 4 December 2024, exposed Tony Buzbee as the lawyer behind the civil lawsuit he insists has “a pattern of these type of theatrics.”
The ‘theatrics’ in question relate to several federal filings made by Buzbee in the Southern District of New York on Sunday.
First reported by NBC News, Buzbee is working on seven lawsuits against Diddy, all of whose plaintiffs level allegations of rape and sexual assault against the disgraced mogul.
“We will let the allegations in the filed complaints speak for themselves, and will work to see that justice is done… We expect to be filing cases weekly naming Mr. Combs and others as defendants as we continue to gather evidence and prepare the filings,” Buzbee said in a statement.
Coincidentally, the Texas lawyer refused to comment on the lawsuit involving Jay-Z.
Mr Carter, on the contrary, levelled a fiery response to the rape lawsuit, calling Buzbee “a deplorable human.”
“You claim to be a marine?! Marines are known for their valour, you have neither honour nor dignity,” he exclaimed.
What is Jay-Z accused of?
Jay-Z posted his response on ROC Nation’s X feed, a notable deviation from how he has handled allegations of this nature in the past.
From what we understand, Buzbee contacted Jay-Z’s lawyers in what he termed a request for mediation “to resolve this matter.”
According to Jay-Z, however, Buzbee sent his lawyers a ‘demand’ letter seeking a settlement amount.
“What he had calculated was the nature of these allegations and the public scrutiny would make me want to settle,” Jay-Z said.
This uncharacteristic reaction from Jay-Z stems from a civil lawsuit filed on behalf of Jane Doe, under New York’s Victims of Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act, a civil law that allows victims of gender-based violence to seek compensation from their abusers and institutions.
The Act has a lookback window that allows courts to lift statutory limitations on GBV cases. In March 2023, the lookback window was extended for two more years, with the new expiry date set for 1 March 2025.
According to the filing, Jay-Z and Diddy allegedly lured Jane Doe, who was 13 at the time, to an MTV VMAs afterparty in New York, in September 2000, drugged her and performed heinous sexual acts against her will.
The unidentified woman, aged 37 when this filing was made, recalled how on that evening, 7 September 2000, she was dropped off by a friend at Radio City Music Hall, where the awards ceremony was held.
Well aware of the fact that she did not have a ticket for entry, the woman, a prepubescent child at the time, approached several limousines she knew chauffeured celebrities, trying to either gain entry to the show or the afterparty.
After several unsuccessful attempts, Jane Doe allegedly struck gold when one driver who allegedly worked for Diddy offered her entry into the afterparty.
The woman recalled being driven to a white house with a U-shaped driveway. She allegedly signed a document she never read nor received a copy of and was whisked into a drug-induced party.
Jane Doe alleged she was handed a drink that made her feel “woozy, lightheaded and felt [like] she needed to lie down.”
Before she could fully comprehend what was happening, Jane Doe claimed she was suddenly surrounded by Diddy, Jay-Z and an unidentified female celebrity in a room.
The suit claims Jay-Z was the first to sexually assault the victim while Diddy and the female celebrity watched,
Diddy allegedly followed afterwards.
Somewhere along the nightmare ordeal, Jane Doe allegedly gathered enough strength to shove Diddy away as he tried to force her to perform oral sex, grab her clothes and exit the party.
According to Jane Doe, she made her way to a nearby filling station where she contacted her father to pick her up.
The lawsuit makes no mention of why the woman never reported the incident to authorities.
Jay-Z, in his statement, made it abundantly clear he had every intention to not only clear his name but also expose Buzbee as a fraud.
“These allegations are so heinous in nature that I implore you to file a criminal complaint, not a civil one… My only heartbreak is for my family. My wife and I will have to sit our children down, one of whom is at the age where her friends will surely see the press and ask questions about the nature of these claims, and explain the cruelty and greed of people,” he said.
The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has, thus far, refused to comment on its plans to pursue a criminal case against Jay-Z.
