Five carrier oils to help you in your natural hair journey

Embarking on a hair journey begins with knowledge. What works for you might not work for someone with a similar hair type. It is important to use what is best for YOUR hair. 

During your hair journey, you will come to find that some products are indispensable. One of these type of products are carrier oils.

What are carrier oils?

Made from plants (vegetables, nuts and fruits), carrier oils are commonly used to dilute essential oils and carry such substances to the skin, hair and scalp.

The five best carrier oils for natural hair

 1. Jojoba oil

With a waxy texture and rich in minerals and vitamins C, B and E, jojoba oil best mimics the skin’s sebum.

Primarily, the oil is used to replenish moisture. This helps with issues related to dryness, itchiness and dandruff. Additionally, it is also used to strengthen the hair shaft and reduce hair loss. 

2. Almond oil

Derived from pressing the seeds of an almond tree, this oil contains significant levels of protein, omega-9 fatty acids and vitamin E.

Almond oil is used to improve the manageability of your hair. It can also help with diminishing friction during styling, reducing split ends and breakage. This would promote length retention, creating the illusion of faster growing hair.

3. Grapeseed oil

Originating from the pressed seeds of grapes, it is a by-product of the wine and juice-making process.

Lightweight, packed with antioxidants and containing Linoleic acid, this oil can help restore moisture, vitality, shine and reduce dandruff. It is best used as a natural sealant to enable the entrapment of moisture.

4. Castor oil

This one is a lifesaver for anyone struggling with thinness, sparse edges, bald spots or just looking for thicker hair (eyelashes and eyebrows included).

Heavy and viscous, derived from the castor bean, the oil normally ranges between a clear to pale yellow colour. However, castor oil that involves roasting or boiling the bean would be darker, this is known as Black castor oil.

Due to its ricinoleic acid, castor oil not only has anti-inflammatory properties (which helps soothe and reduce scalp irritation) but also anti-fungal properties, helping the scalp remain cleaner for longer. It is best used as a sealant.

5. Coconut oil

The most known entry on the list. This versatile “fix-all” oil can be used as a pre-poo, moisturiser or by adding it to your conditioner.

As great and versatile as this oil can be, it requires a bit more knowledge than the other entries, as it can promote protein buildup on dry and coarse hair by blocking moisture.
