Rihanna is bold but taking the durag to the front cover of May’s British Vogue issue is a statement of rebellion only urban fashion purists will recognise and appreciate.
Rihanna covers British Vogue: When will May issue be published?
The star took to social media to unveil two versions of May’s British Vogue issue that will be published on Friday 3 April.
Riri pays homage to the durag
We have seen Rihanna in a durag before (harken back to the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards) but why is it such a big deal in 2020? Well, according to the cited publication, Rihanna’s feature on the upcoming issue is all about the history and rebellion of the durag.
A traditional description of a durag is “a close-fitting, typically stretchable piece of cloth that is worn on the head and that usually has long ends which are tied in the back”.
African American history, however, offers a deeper look at what the durag meant to black women and how a rebellion was born from slavery and oppression.
Unveiling the Rihanna British Vogue feature, Funmi Fetto writes:

.
“The tainted fabric has been reclaimed as a symbol of black beauty, a signifier of style worn on the streets, the catwalk, the red carpet… And now, in a powerful mic-drop moment, the durag is making its first appearance on the May 2020 cover of British Vogue, worn by Rihanna,”
Due to the coronavirus outbreak, it has not been confirmed if Vogue’s May issue will be available on stands. Being that we live in the digital age, the publication has encouraged readers to sign up for newsletters on instructions on how to download the May issue on Friday.
Don’t fret, though. We will do the dirty work and bring the issue — or instructions on how to get it — to you.
