Laduma Ngxokolo’s MaXhosa brought a fresh burst of colour and vibrance at the Rakuten Fashion Week in Tokyo, Japan, on Friday.
MaXhosa takes over Tokyo with new ‘Lindelwa’ collection
South Africa’s high-end fashion staple teased a collaboration with Tokyo Knit on a capsule named Lindelwa under the audacious tagline, “We are the ones they have been waiting for.”
Lindelwa marked MaXhosa’s first showcase for 2021. Named after his late mother, Ngokolo kept true to the essence of his inspiration on this collaboration which, according to the brand, was made possible by renowned culture curator Awa’Tori.
For the first time, the world was given a glimpse into an intercontinental fashion marriage never seen before. A Xhosa-inspired knitwear design matched at the seams with Tokyo Knit, Japan’s next generation of fashion production.
Here are some of the looks that made it to the runway at Rakuten Fashion Week:
When will ‘Lindelwa’ be available for purchase
Lindelwa is MaXhosa’s 2022 Spring/Summer collection. The collaborative effort exists without an official date of release, at this time. All we know, at this juncture, is that the collection is bridged by the Fashion and Culture Exchange Africa Japan (FACE-AJ), a collective series that showcases the culture & creativity from Africa and Japan.
