The irony of it all makes for one helluva punchline but nonetheless on this day, the world joins the United States (US) in celebrating Earth Day 2020.
What is Earth Day 2020 and why should we care?
22 April 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual commemoration of the fight for environmental rights. According to EarthDay.org, the annual celebrations are an effort to “build the world’s largest environmental movement to drive transformative change for people and planet.”
If there was a time we needed transformative change in the way we treat the environment it is now. More than half of the world is in some form of quarantine, a response to the rapid spread of a deadly coronavirus (Covid-19).
“Earth Day Network’s mission is to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide.”

The theme for this year’s observation is “climate action”. The organisation hopes to spread an important message on how climate change “represents the biggest challenge to the future of humanity and the life-support systems that make our world habitable.”
Five online events you can attend to celebrate Earth Day
You may ask yourself, “how am I expected to make an impact from the confines of my bedroom?” Well, it is simple, the organisation says.
“Over the 24 hours of Earth Day, the 50th anniversary of Earth Day will fill the digital landscape with global conversations, calls to action, performances, video teach-ins and more. While Earth Day may be going digital, our goal remains the same: to mobilize the world to take the most meaningful actions to make a difference. No matter where you are, you can make a difference. And you’re not alone, because together, we can save the Earth.”
